چکیده
________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Masked semantic priming in cocktail party situation The present study aimed at testing automatic semantic processing in the auditory modality using the cocktail party situation. Participants had to perform a lexical decision task on a target item embedded in a multi-talker babble. This babble was made of voices pronouncing words sharing semantic features with each other and with the target (priming voices). Other voices pronounced words which were semantically independent (masking voices). Results showed that the observed priming effect was significant only when the number of priming voices was strictly higher than the number of masking voices. This need of intelligibility suggests that semantic processes underlying the observed priming effect were strategic. MOTS-CLES : Amorçage sémantique masqué, situation de cocktail party, traitements sémantiques stratégiques

Musical training, individual differences and the cocktail party problem
Are musicians better able to understand speech in noise than non-musicians? Recent findings have produced contradictory results. Here we addressed this question by asking musicians and non-musicians to understand target sentences masked by other sentences presented from different spatial locations, the classical 'cocktail party problem' in speech science. We found that musicians obtained a subs...
متن کاملMeasured Performance for Real-Time Localization of Cocktail-Party Talkers
Technology improvements, hardware, software and algorithmic, have made the use of a largeaperture microphone array cost effective. In this paper we present real, measured results for our wired, 128microphone array that surrounds a focal area (room) of about 7Mx5M. While it was necessary to evaluate the performance of the array offline using the array’s recording feature, we ensured that all the...
متن کاملThe cocktail party phenomenon revisited: the importance of working memory capacity.
Wood and Cowan (1995) replicated and extended Moray's (1959) investigation of the cocktail party phenomenon, which refers to a situation in which one can attend to only part of a noisy environment, yet highly pertinent stimuli such as one's own name can suddenly capture attention. Both of these previous investigations have shown that approximately 33% of subjects report hearing their own name i...
متن کاملUsing Artificial Intelligence to Assist Psychological Testing
Balancing ecological validity and control in psychological testing is a challenge. We have explored the use of Interactive Virtual Environment Technology to create an environment for psychological testing. Specifically we have created a Cocktail Party World to provide experimental control in the study of the phenomena of ostracism in its various forms. To address ecological validity we have cre...
متن کاملSpeech-in-speech perception and executive function involvement
This present study investigated the link between speech-in-speech perception capacities and four executive function components: response suppression, inhibitory control, switching and working memory. We constructed a cross-modal semantic priming paradigm using a written target word and a spoken prime word, implemented in one of two concurrent auditory sentences (cocktail party situation). The p...
